| Fly was written around an idea of a
friend, Mitch Gregory, back in 1995/96 and was probably the first real
attempt at writing a full blown song rather than just a expression of sound.
Mitch, at the time, lived not far from me and we would occasionally bounce
ideas around at his house. This came from a guitar phrase he'd come up
with which I then built the keyboard sections around. From there it took
on this kind of 80's China Crisis sound and went through a number of demo
attempts to this version.
Probably the song that sums up much of what "Pantomime" is about.
It's basically the me of that time trying to talk the younger adolescent
me out of his pessimistic outlook. Like a lot of teenagers I went through
the stage of hating the deck I'd been dealt even though in reality it was
a pretty damn good one. I think it's only as you grow older and gain experience
that you actually start to appreciate what you have.
