The Blanket Sky

The Blanket Sky was one of a series of songs intended for the strings. I've always enjoyed the use of a real string section in a pop song "Eleanor Rigby", "Life On Mars" or stuff like "Suffocate" by The Teardrop Explodes or "Smithers Jones" by The Jam. I had a number of tunes based around a more orchestral pattern of which this was the first. The strings sounds were layered from my Yamaha pss-51 keyboard although my playing was rather hampered by a lack of ability and the production is not up to much either.
The vocals were something of a triumph though with a rich layer of six different harmonies that I managed to mix quite reasonably lifting the overall production. The lyric was from an attempt at poetry written prior to the music, the idea behind which being we fill the sky with our hopes and dreams (wishing on a star, praying to our God etc.) but then we leave them there and get bogged down in our Earthly quandries. I guess it's a kind of call to go back and reclaim them.
